This tourist region embraces the western low lands of Bolivia and consists of seven towns such as San Javier, Concepción, San Ignacio de Velasco, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael and San José de Chiquitos.
This region is called the Jesuit Missions because this was the indigenous region where the Spanish Jesuits settled and evangelized in times of the colony between the XVI and XVII centuries. In 1992, this region was declared The Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by the UNESCO.
San José de Chiquitos
One of the attractions are the churches which are real architectural jewels placed in the middle of forest. This region which had remained forgotten for more than two centuries, recovered the world’s interest when the film “La Misión” was filmed. Today it is possible to admire these architectural marvels thanks to the German architect Hans Roth and his group of experts who restored the original splendor of these churches.
The Baroque Music Festival and the religious celebrations (The Holy Week and Corpus Christie) are also inviting reasons to visit this region. A whole tour of the region takes from 5 to 6 days
